That was a bizarre video... I think it would be good for new players, but wow. And does anyone know exactly what year they made the change from the first turn draw card?

Hello Tog,

it is in fact true that for a long time the player that went first also drew first. They changed this only several years after Magic the Gathering was released when it became more and more clear that it gave the starting player to much of an advantage.

The tutorial asked player A (the player who plays first) to draw a card on his first turn! I don't remember that being part of the game... lol!

Thanks for the information, Chris. I think the video is really hilarious and hopefully we can collect a few more fun commercials/tutorials from "old times". If anyone has a suggestion please let me know and we add it.

This is from the Learn to Play video that was included into the Starter Box release in the late 90's, and not really a marketing attempt as such. It really is an attempt to have a learn-to-play video that was fun to watch. The main 'doctor' is local comedian Pat Cashman, who was on Almost Live, Seattle's answer to Saturday Night Live, with Bill Nye (before he was the Science Guy) and Joel McHale (who is now on the NBC show Community). I wasn't around when it was created, so I don't have any insight on that.
