Rags to Riches: Week Four – A Storm is Brewing

Hey Folks,

Welcome to part 4 of my weekly series. Part 3 can be viewed HERE for those just joining us! This time we have not many trades, but instead a few juicy opportunities that should provide us with new munition moving forward. As in the last few episodes one of my first actions is always to look out for freebies from generous players. This time I did not advertise; I simply responded to a classified that was giving away a few free cards as can be seen here.

As my regular readers might remember, I acquired a foil Siege-Gang Commander a while back and was eager to trade or sell the card for tickets. Today I found a buyer for the foil.

I sold the Siege-Gang Commander for 3 tickets and a few random commons, which was a fine deal.

The fact that I had tickets available again was very important for me as it opened up other possibilities I did not have without them. Remember, “tickets are king!”

I started scanning bots for good opportunities. Even though I should probably keep this for myself, I will tell you anyway: some bots are updated very late. This means concretely that you will often find cards that have outdated prices and make for a nice deal. I spotted a very nice foil card for 1 ticket on a popular bot and could not resist to go all in: foil Comet Storm I am coming! The card is pretty popular in some Block decks and is definitively worth more than 1 ticket. First I traded only one, but then immediately decided to go back and get a full playset. I even traded away my Linvala, Keeper of Silence to pay for it and 0.3 credits on the bot. Here is the trade:

Don’t be mistaken; I won’t hang on to these for long. Immediately after I posted in the Classifieds that I was selling them for 2 tix. After some time a player decided that he/she could not pass up on that opportunity and I sold my first one for 2 tickets.

This went pretty well today and hopefully I will be able to resell the other 3 for a nice boost of my ticket account. I am wrapping up with our usual value count of the collection (bot buying prices):

Collection Value: 22.92 Event Tickets

Before I say goodbye I would like to ask my readers to send us links of their favorite Magic the Gathering videos on Youtube. This can be anything ranging from people on a convention in 1993 trading their Moxes for Fireballs, exciting tournament and game reports, or funny stuff. Preferably, send content of decent quality. You can either link in the comments below or simply send the link to marin@mtgoacademy.com. Who knows, we might distribute some Academy Points for the best submissions :-) .

You should definitively check out the video link we posted on Monday in our “News” about the first Pro Tour ever. You will not only find hilarious game play errors but also see the creator of the game, Richard Garfield as well as the first MtG world champion, Zak Dolan, and live comments by Mark Rosewater during the matches.

My last reminder for everyone that did not sign up for our Newsletter that is soon to come is: you are missing out. Don’t tell me you didn’t that take the few seconds necessary to get in on the action: ’nuff said!

Take care everyone and until next time,

Marin

  1. I love this series, but could you perhaps add a link to previous weeks? I started on this week 3 and had a hard time tracking down weeks 2 and 1. I’m sure it’s possible, but a little link would make it so much easier!

Amazing trades though…I guess I should work harder at finding bargains :)

  2. Hello Zage,

a small hint for anyone searching for past episodes of recurring columns – the search bar on the top right works for articles, videos and random searches for authors. Just type “From Rags to Riches” and you will see them all in front of you in their full beauty :-)

  3. @Plejades: Thanks. I looked through the articles – economy dropbox but it didn’t go back far enough and I was pretty much at a loss how to find older articles (admittedly I didn’t look too well, the ‘search this site’ is sort of obvious -.-).

Anyway, it was nice to read the start of this experiment. Thanks for the help!

  4. This is great, very entertaining and useful! I just started reading today, and decided to make an account for the site because of it haha!

  5. Hello everyone,

@ShardFenix – Thanks for the links. Both channels seem to be interesting for everyone interested in those formats.

@Aznsilly – Glad you like it. I hope I can keep up with good trades in the future.

  6. I love the fact that something like that is even possible, though it doesnt seem very easy to manage. kudos to u sir

  7. It’s amazing how prices change over time. Four years later, and that Comet Storm is only worth $0.17, while the Linvala, Keeper of Silence you traded to pick up two of them is now worth $23.

Of course, holding on to a good card for four years just in case it shoots up in value isn’t viable for this sort of thing, but still. Crazy.
