  1. i didnt know moan took out big stuff

how does this guy get worse week in and week out

  2. Definitely would’ve taken the harrowing journey over the 2nd cat pack 1. Probably would’ve taken grotto over pike pack 2 also, b/w usually needs fixing, and pike just doesn’t seem great in this deck / b/w in general.

  3. rd1 we didnt get to play our swamp(meant to say plains but with how bad you are expect to be nitpicked on everything

and then you should have dead weighted outcast forcing him to block a 1/1 instead of boneflinger

  4. hey marshall,

i really appreciate your videos and i have learned a lot about how to think while playing from them. i’ve only been playing a little while, but this week i have won two drafts already (paper) and i credit yours and simon’s videos for that.

sometimes your play leaves me with questions. i’m watching the second round right now and am just baffled as to why you dont want the juggernaut in with the gun when he has a full board of 1 toughness dudes. it’s like a machine gun in that case. i’ll have to watch the rest to see what happens. thanks for giving your time to improve other enthusiasts!

  5. ok, more: r3g2, you let the hamlet captain kill the torturer instead of sacing the cathar for a counter and then getting another counter on top of that, leaving you with a 4/3 instead of a 2/2 on the board. i’m curious what your reasoning was here? you didn’t comment on it at the time and i thought it might have been a better play. liked the deck though, great synergy and all that!

  6. I am not through all your video’s yet, however a couple of things I want to comment on. Not taking the Banshee/Thraben sentry/demonmail hauberk/typhoid rats seemed like pretty loose picks.
These are all cards that work exceptionally well with the archetype you are aiming for, but you end up not taking them.

Next to that I caught you on some play mistakes (most of the mistakes you caught on yourself). M1G2 you have the juggernaut/sentry setup. You should have attacked with your sentry too, since it would allow you to use boneslinger/slip more favourable. You should rewatch it, since typing out all the possible ways the combat would go is a bit to much here, however you missed the opportunity for him to make mistakes/get some more damage in.

  7. CJ:

“rd1 we didnt get to play our swamp(meant to say plains but with how bad you are expect to be nitpicked on everything”

So in the first round Marshall said “We didn’t get to play our swamp” instead of saying “We didn’t get to play our plains”…?

This isn’t useful criticism, guy. If you really think Marshall is so bad, you should focus on correcting the huge, terrible mistakes he’s making, and not on slips of the tongue.

  8. Sad that neither demonmail hauberk got even a mention as a possible option especially when you mentioned equipment on a couple different occasions. Triggers slip, untaps juggernaut, and makes anything a threat, and I think with a token generator like doomsayer could really make it awesome.

  9. Solid draft sir. Just a couple of misplays but I chalk those up to you talking to us and not concentrating as much as you would otherwise. Keep it up man! Ripped a foil Snapcaster last night at my local shop! It’s gonna pay for my Avacyn PreRe’s! :D

  10. dude don’t listen to the grumpy people above, your deck was solid

you made a couple of small misplays, your commentary is excellent and i learn lots each time you post new stuff (well maybe not from the cube videos)

to turn out video’s week in week out like you do is some commitment so ignore anyone being grumpy about your misplays (i certainly make a lot more than you do)

  11. Question: game 2, round 3 why would you not sac the cathar to the torturer to make it a 4/3 and survive the block? A 4/3 torturer seems a bit better than a 2/2 cathar. Especially later in the game when you can sac guys like doomed traveler and fly over for beats. Regardless of how the draft ended up, I really enjoy your videos and the podcast! You are an excellent teacher, and I have learned quite a bit from you!

  12. @cj I have no clue what you are saying, and I’m pretty sure you don’t either. This isn’t useful to anyone, and I’m just assuming it’s trolling at this point.

@Gaws Fair choices, I don’t like Grotto at all in BW. I will just usually not run them at all as you really need every one of your lands to produce colored mana in the deck.

@henry Thanks man, I appreciate you saying so. Can get a little rough when people focus a lot on negative stuff, but hearing this kind of comment re-enforces to me why I do the videos and the show. :) I’ll go back and check out the 2nd round where you mentioned, I might have just missed something, it has happened before. I’ll also check that R3G2 spot, but I suspect that I didn’t want to get blown out by a combat trick. Sometimes I can’t fit all the things going through my head into the small time frame for talking I have, I’ll try to do better there though.

@de Smit I disagree with your statement, and I think it’s a common mistake during draft. Those cards do not work “exceptionally well” with what I was going for. One Typhoid Rats with one Quiver is not some game breaking auto pick. It’s a nice synergy when you can get it, but it’s not like the point of the deck. Demonmail Hauberk is good when you have plenty of expendable creatures, especially ones that make more creatures when they die. My deck did not have this. Sentry and Banshee would have been fine in the deck and I wish I had them, but I was also happy with what I took. I’ll check out M1G2 combat, thanks for pointing it out :)

@Mike Yes this guy is not helping anyone get better at Magic, and that’s what we are here for. I am open to criticism as I show here week after week, but this kind of thing has no place here. Thanks for saying so as well, I appreciate it.

    @Shane35007 Thanks man, I needed that :)

@P4TR1CK I think that this deck actually didn’t want Demonmail that much. When I am not running a ton of creatures, have almost no token making creatures, and have only some Morbid cards I am less interested in Hauberk. I really want a deck with lots of saccable Humans and spirit tokens to make Hauberk work. I have never been a huge fan of the card generally, so I’m pretty picky about which decks I consider it for.

    @Chris Ya, I liked it a lot.

@oma Thanks, and yes the misplays are partly me just not being amazing and partly video distractions probably. Dude, foil Snpacaster, beautiful! I just traded one of my foil Snpacasters for a dual land. Thoughts? (It was a mint revised Scrubland and some other small stuff). AVR PreRe’s are coming up fast… I have to get this set all knocked out before Barcelona! It’s like having homework again. Really awesome homework. :)

@orcidas Thanks dude, I appreciate you saying so. This stuff isn’t easy and it’s nice to hear that you guys see that. My main goal has always been to show my thought process and to learn the game together with my viewers as we progress. I get a lot of good feedback that the videos have helped people, and that’s why I do them.

@John I have to go back and check this for sure, but I think I didn’t want to put all my eggs in one basket and get blown out by removal/combat trick. I can’t remember exactly though so I’ll check. Thanks for the kind words as well, it makes me really happy to hear when people have gotten something useful from the videos/podcast. That’s the main reason I do them, so to hear it’s working is the reward :D

  13. In match 2, game 1… the Galvanic Juggernaut makes a much better Wolfhunter’s Quiver target than the Midnight Guard when your opponent has Lingering Souls flashed back with another 1/1. You can machine gun all of them down in one turn, thanks to the untapping of the Galvanic Juggernaut whenever anything dies.

Great draft though. Thanks for posting!

  14. Love the videos! I have picked up a lot of strategy tips from these and your podcasts. You deck was great and had a lot of potential. That last round was just a quicker agro tempo. no way around that when they get sweet draws. Had that last weekend at the Phoenix Open when we played two headed giant. We had a great pair or decks with Red/Black agro/kill and White/Blue Control/spirits. Guys we played were blue/white and red/white and had Inv Stalker out on T2 with a bonds of faith on it, then cleaver dropped on T3 with a second bonds of faith, then cleaver equipped on T4. Sometimes, there is no way around a good draw.

@torpesh: That is actually a sweet option! if they are tapped out and you know they cant respond, Jugger with a quiver will sweep their board of 1 toughness. I will have to watch for that opportunity!

  15. @torpesh Ya I haven’t gone back but that does seem to be the case. I may have gotten a bit of tunnel vision about the Midnight guard or something.

@mike76 Thanks dude, appreciate the feedback :) Agreed about the “now way out of a good draw” thing. The key is to focus on the parts of the game that you could have changed yourself. If those check out, then move on. If they don’t, then you fix them and try to apply them in the next game. (and all games going forward)

  16. I’m not a “trading guy” so I really can’t speak to what is or is not a good trade most of the time. However, I have decided that since Snapcaster is an eternal card, that his value is only going to rise, especially after rotation. I came to this decision because 2 separate dealers I know did not have the vision to give me 50 cash or 2 Hellvault sealed entries so I’m gonna save it till it goes up to stupid cash levels and laugh at them while I remind them that they had the opportunity to buy it for 50 bucks! :D

  17. *troll troll troll*
Thanks for the vid, Marshall. Great to watch some solid magic. Even your (apparently multitudinous according to the peanut gallery) play mistakes help me get better.

  18. Hey Marshal, wouldn’t Galvanic Juggernaut and quiver have been a better combo in game 2? Jugs gets to untap each time a creature dies right? with 3 spirits+disciple at 1 toughness couldn’t you have juggernaut, equip, ping 1, untap, four times and then just swing?

  19. just because no one pointed it out yet:
m1g1 the one point of damage should have been game – blood feud targeting pitchburn devils and a three-power creature, with you at one = dob
