Limited Resources: Return to Rise of the Eldrazi Draft #3

Rise of Eldrazi is back as an out-of-print draft format, and Marshall is eager to get into the queues.

  1. Vent Sentinal really is a great card. I got forced into the defender archetype by being passed 4 of them yesterday. That first opponent complaining about you winning with what he considered a deck too boring for him was pretty funny. I know it’s supposed to be about having fun, but drafting is also about taking the best cards. I think the deck is really fun though. lol Glad you are a class act with people like that. I just kind of laugh it off when stuff like that happens as well. I know deep inside it’s just a little bit more satisfying to win against jerks.

  2. Love the R1 opponent salt. Guy plays a worse version of your deck and then gets mad at you for it.

  3. p1p1, I dont get taking nest invader over vendetta…invader is good, but not super good or anything, just a fine card. Vendetta is one of the best commons, isn’t it?

  4. Such salty opponents for a Swiss event! The reason to play Swiss is to be able to play all 3 rounds no matter what happens – save he salt for 8-4s!

Love seeing you take the Defender deck for another swing – better results this time around than over the summer!

It’s funny how your reactions to Guard Duty change when you are playing the Defender deck – yes, please, more like that!

  5. The round one saltiness was funny but it was even better because you just don’t respond or getting in a pissing match. Part of the reason I love your videos. Keep of the great work. Go defenders!

  6. Every time someone gets salty on video I want Marshall to say “thanks for the feedback!” and then tell them to check out the video on mtgoacademy.com. You know, as a way to help them improve their game.

  7. “p1p1, I dont get taking nest invader over vendetta…invader is good, but not super good or anything, just a fine card. Vendetta is one of the best commons, isn’t it?”

I take Vendetta as well but I think it’s pretty close. Nest invader isn’t amazing, but it’s very good and certainly first pickable. Also I think green is probably the best color in the set.

  8. I don’t know if I would characterize the first round opponent as salty, and I don’t think marshall took it that way (maybe?). IMHO to be salty the behavior has to have a component of unreasonableness. I can empathize with him, though. Imagine your new friends invite you to go play basketball and when you get there they tell you they have a few house rules: the court is outside and covered with grass, they only play in full pads, helmets, cleats and the ball is oblong shaped. They don’t call traveling, the goal is a little different: two white lines on the ground 100yds apart instead of a round hoop, and to score you need to get the ball over the goal and not through it. That’s a great game of basketball, huh? Point is I love interesting and different limited strategies, but there comes a point where changes made aren’t tweaks but the creation of a whole new game. We play magic because we wanna play magic.

That being said, I LOVE drafting defenders every chance I get and I still think it’s legitimate magic, but it’s definitely pushing the boundaries a bit, although it’s no manaless dredge.

  9. I don’t have a problem with the defenders deck, and I wouldn’t even call it “pushing the boundaries” of legitimate magic. It’s the same game. Play creatures and get your opponent to 0 life. The difference here is that he’s doing it with activated abilities of creatures.

Is storm not “legitimate magic” in Modern Masters? What about mill? Elite Arcanist/Silence in M14? It’s simply a different strategy of doing the same thing, and it’s very successful at that just because it comes at the game a different way than people expect.

  10. Shocking, Marshall drafts Rise of the Eldrazi and ends up in defender.dek. Given your utter inability to pass a Vent Sentinel ever:

    1) Why not just force it from P1P1? Why the pretense that you might
    2) Why bother recording ROE videos?
    3) Why bother playing this format?

You gush about how awesome the draft format is, but then you don’t do anything outside of Vent Sentinels. Is that all this beautiful, varied format is to you? Jon should have made your stipulation draft, “Play in a ROE event and don’t take any defenders.” It would have been fun to watch you squirm…

P.S. – Nice Raid Bombardment, bro.
P.P.S. – Jermo48 knows what he’s talking about, you sack. Anybody can just draft the right cards, build the right deck, then make the correct plays and win a draft…AGAINST MANA SCREWED OPPONENTS. Must be nice to be Marshall Sutcliffe…

People should go back and watch a ROE draft video where you had a brilliant copilot to keep you on target: http://www.mtgoacademy.com/limited-resources-a-pick-is-worth-a-thousand-words/

Who knew your first video here would obviously be your best?

  11. @Hascow

“s storm not “legitimate magic” in Modern Masters? What about mill? Elite Arcanist/Silence in M14? It’s simply a different strategy of doing the same thing, and it’s very successful at that just because it comes at the game a different way than people expect.”

A lot of Magic players are elitist and fixate on the weirdest things, so to a lot of players those really aren’t legitimate Magic. Don’t ask me why they would care, some people care about the stupidest shit, e.g. the person who posted right below you.

  12. @kajillion the person who posted right below Hascow is none other than ryan spain: digital designer at wizards, good friend of marshall, and all around excellent limited player.

  13. Oh, hahaha, my bad. That makes a lot more sense if it’s a good friend of Marsall’s and not some rando complaining about free videos online.

  14. I can’t believe you played 8 forests and only 7 mountains. You said you didn’t need double red but you have three Vent Sentinels! And a double-red spell. Battlement and Nest Invader are nice to play on curve, but you mere constrained on red mana a few times and you really have no use for multiple forests. I suppose you have to cut a mountain as punishment for the Raid Bombardment pick. :)

  15. @Godot

It’s hilarious that without your name attached you’re just some ass complaining about free videos on the internet.

  16. Wow, that was an insane series of match-ups, Martial. Really do need to look into more Eldrazi stuff. Already enjoy the level up mechanic stuff.

  17. So, I only started playing magic in Scars of Mirrodin, and I missed the time when Rise of the Eldrazi was beeing played.

But I’m watching draft vids of the format and I’m honestly not getting what’s so special about it. The mechanics are wicked cool – Totem Armor, Levelers and Eldrazi are awesome. But as far as focusing on synergy and constructing a deck, I feel like most of the recent formats had that in equal (or at least comparable) measures to Rise of the Eldrazi. I’m thinking Scars of Mirrodin, Innistrad and Theros (Return to Ravnica was cool in it’s way but I feel it was not as good as the rest of the sets I played so far).

So what’s the allure that I’m missing? what’s so awesome with the format?

  18. Also since Godot is here (hey! haven’t seen you in a while!) , I wanted to ask – where might I find some of your old draft vids with Marhsall? I REALLY enjoyed your Scars of Mirrodin block vids, but I can’t seem to find them anymore…

  19. @Carrot, they should all be on our site, if you’re referring to LR vids. If you can’t locate them after checking, let me know and I’ll do some digging.

  20. @PlanetWalls – thanks for the replay.

The thing is that no matter how deep I dig into the archives in the site, I find only a very partial part of the old vids. I went through the entire archive, and only found a couple SOM drafts, one triple mirroding besieged, one triple new phyrexia and one NMS block (that was actually Marshall going solo).

I’m pretty sure there used to be more than that, but I can’t seem to find them anywhere.

  21. I love watching you play that deck, and not just because you sound like an excited schoolboy every time someone passes you a defender :)
