Standard Spike: CawBlade in Standard Daily Event

Editor’s Note: Hey guys- I had an issue while rendering Round 1, so the audio is a bit harsher than I’d like to put up. I took note, so hopefully it will not happen again! All other videos should have higher quality audio- sorry for the inconvenience! -Chris

  1. Mic was fine after match 1, as the Editor’s Note mentions.

I like Tumble magnet. It even has bonus synergy with Gideon, though that never came up.

What are your thoughts on GerryT’s UWr builds? You beat one, but neither of those opponents seemed to play optimally.

  2. What about Venser as a 1-of, either in addition to Sun Titan or moving him to the board? Making creatures unblockable seems relevant, he plays well with all of the ETB creatures, gives vigilance, and forces your opponent to play aggressive, since he will end games. Resetting magnets isn’t the worst.

I also can’t see running journeys from the board, when everyone will bring in their nature’s claims/etc, it’s the worst possible removal for this deck. Not to mention you play ratchet bombs, that’s just one more bad interaction. Condemn, Oust or a split seems much better.

I’ve been playing an Esper version of the deck, and it has been incredibly good, since inquisition is a maindeck answer to swords, good vs valakut, and great vs aggro. Hitting DOJ on time is the only issue, but I decided to player fewer and more spot removal, since inquisition buys you time and DOJ isn’t as good since Grave Titan left the format.

  3. I think it’s wrong to get SoFaF in the Valakut match. The whole idea is to get stoneforge online, mill mountains, titans and valakuts.
That is why SoBaM is so good.

Other then that. Watch out not to make so much noise during recordings. It’s quite annoying.

  4. Great video and congrats on the victory. I want to know though, has anybody tried Brass Squire in a deck like this? I feel that there could be a nice synergy between Stoneforge Mystic and the Squire.

  5. @drn: Venser isn’t the worst, but I want my 5-drops to do a little more than what Venser has to offer. Gideon and Baneslayer both have immediate impact and are generally better threats as well.

I like Journey because it’s an answer to everything from Fauna Shaman to Primeval Titan, but you do bring up a good point about it. I’ve never liked Oust because I want that slot to be an actual removal spell. Neither Oust nor Condemn deal with Fauna Shaman or Primeval Titan in a good way. If I do make a switch, Oust > Condemn.

I actually tested Esper a bit yesterday. Inquisition is a lot better than Spell Pierce in non-mirror matches, but I’m not sure if all the changes are worth it.

@Nesqq: The amount of times you have to hit with Sword of Body and Mind before it matters can range from 2-4. Sword of Feast and Famine starts mattering a lot sooner mostly because both abilities are relevant. Having the option to do stuff and still leave plenty of counters open is worthwhile. I normally get Sword of Body and Mind when I don’t have anything to do on my own turn.
