  1. Very nice job Zimbardo, fun to read about decks of metagame, fun too to have a list of playable cards for each color, to play if you want to play that color, i recognize this is a very nice article and it have a lot of job to can do it.

    Thanks a lot.

  2. Nice article man!

This is super helpful and I will likely use it to update some outdated versions of decks I don’t play often.

I think another card deserves mentioned for Rec Sur though… Sun Titan. That dude is nuts in rec sur. Also of note in that list is that Pelakka Wurm is probably just better than Phantom Nishoba out of the board. Nothing sucks worse than getting your nice Nishoba on the board and wait a turn to attack while gobs just burns you out. I only noticed that after looking at the multicolor check list and wondering what the heck deck runs Nishoba?

Cheers to hitting that 7th land drop and casting fireball for 18! If only that deck weren’t so good, I might play something else.

    Nice work

  3. Very nice article.

You have great descriptions of the major decks in the field, and this article will be a useful tool for anyone who wants to try out the format.

I think most of the decks look pretty much top notch, however I think the Rec-Sur deck is lacking a bit.

Personally I don’t think that Aggro is anywhere near the king of the hill right now. I think that prize is easily in the hands of UW control, as evidenced by the last 3-4 firing weekend events.

  4. As someone who is interested in starting in this format, this article provides a great overview of the decks and common cars which are run in each. Great job!

  5. On Rec-Sur: yeah, one could easily change a few cards in that list. Demonic_Penguin has something like eight Top 8′s with approximately that list, and I even took out a few cards that I thought were questionable before posting this list. Like I said, I think that’s close to what you would be most likely to face, so that’s what I included. If you prefer to use a different list, I suggest this PE winning list by Travis (so many trolls).

On the king of the hill: I was specifically pointing out that Elves has the biggest share of Top 8′s since July. And Aggro similarly has the biggest share of Top 8′s out of the categories of decks. That’s not in question, but if you want to discuss what the BEST deck might be, then you could definitely make a strong argument in favor of UW.

My opinion on the BEST deck is that it’s really, really hard to figure that out in 100CS. It’s impossible to be really good against everybody, so you have to try to figure out what decks you expect to face and what you think would be good against those decks. I find that knowing what’s good against what is more difficult than it would first appear. It’s part of my learning curve as a 100CS player.

  6. Great job, this had to take a monumental amount of time and effort. You certainly captured the major players in the format.

Poor black, it didn’t even get a part 2 of cards in the Gauntlet, and even had to steal Inferno Titan from red.

That GWR list needs a lot of work though, it’s missing Taiga, Wasteland, and Reflecting Pool, obviously built by some scrub.

Re: Terravore/Countryside Crusher in GWR, I have considered them. The problem with Terravore is that it is too unreliable IMO. Generally it is 2/2-4/4 depending on how many fetchlands are in the graveyards. Yes, it is awesome with Armageddon, but there just aren’t enough Armageddon effects for that to be a reliable benefit. Also, if I am casting Armageddon or have killed a bunch of my opponent’s land, it probably isn’t going to matter if I have Terravore out or some other respectable beaters. Terravore seems like a win-more card to me. I’m still up in the air regarding Crusher. It’s been solid when I’ve had it in testing, but I still want some more experience before I add it back in. Often I get cold feet when it comes to playing the Crusher in terms of the # of lands I want in play.

I have to reinforce ArchGenius’ point in regards to UW(b) control being the deck to beat in the VERY recent history – not only did it win the 11/6/10 event, but from scouting the event at least 11!!! out of 24 decks could be classified as some form of UW control. With those numbers, it’s not surprising it ended up winning the tournament. I didn’t see what the results were for last Friday’s PE or if it even fired, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see a ton of UW again. If you’re game planning for PEs in the immediate future, focusing heavily on beating UW should be a top priority.

  7. Looks like I need to pay attention to lands – thanks for pointing that out. Oops! Once in a while I notice a list that is missing a dual land, but now I’m wondering how many of those instances have escaped my notice.

  8. Yeah Burning Wish for Scapeshift is pretty tech. That way you never have to worry about drawing your game winning spell :)

  9. ME4 hit obviously. Expecting to see more monocolor decks this week lol.

Some major changes in 100cs on the B&R list:
    100 Card Singleton

    Fastbond is banned.
    Library of Alexandria is banned.
    Mana Vault is banned.
    Mind Twist is banned.
    Regrowth is banned.
    Sensei’s Divining Top is banned.
Survival of the Fittest is banned.
    Time Vault is banned.
    Wheel of Fortune is banned.

  10. lol @ banning regrowth, seriously? Soooo glad I didn’t buy Survival, it was really tempting me. The only one that really hurts me is Top, since it’s just a comforting card and can help you make it through some rough times. Not really getting the choices at all though.

  11. It’s no surprise that they banned some of the new cards, but I think it’s simply incredible that they’d feel the need to ADD existing cards to the banned list when we have a good metagame and some of us have repeatedly asked them to REMOVE cards from the list. I’m hugely disappointed by this boneheaded move.

  12. Like most people, I’m not a huge fan of banning unless individual cards are format warping. I have waited for the Top to be banned by Wizards from the beginning. It is in almost every competitive deck.

Funny enough Zimbardo, the biggest difference between your version of WW and mine, is that it has Top and fetch lands.

  13. Surprised they haven’t banned Wasteland but banned Top, is there any deck that doesn’t run Wasteland in the optimal build?

I can understand banning Mind Twist, but it wasn’t necessary. Black is really hurting in the 100cs metagame now. Survival is in a similar boat to MT, although I was hoping Survival would stay unbanned in 100cs and get axed in Legacy to drop its price so I could play with it. Top is understandable but doesn’t really change much other than opening up 1 slot in most decks and making Future Sight and Trinket Mage worse.

Banning Regrowth is silly. Library doesn’t seem necessary although it possibly could be excellent in some control decks. They should’ve at least given these cards a chance to be played and see how they work out. Fastbond, Wheel, and Mana Vault make sense. If they aren’t gonna print the Power 9, putting out Time Vault on MTGO makes absolutely no sense. The only use the card will see is in infinite turn combos, and that much clicking will be tedious and boring on MTGO.

  14. From the above discussion, you guys already saw it, but I want to keep the discussion going. I left a lengthy comment in the awkwardly formatted Facebook-ripoff page, as the Lincoln-head Guest.

  15. Hey 70sSnidd, thanks for making yourself heard. You should PM me in game to chat about the B/R list. I am working on a campaign of sorts for this issue. I think we can get some attention if we approach this correctly.
