  1. Awesome I’ve been waiting for another article from you and this is a great summary of the weird world of MTGO. One thing I’d like to add to the human vs bot bit – I don’t think people are looking at classifieds enough before buying. I had many ads up this weekend for Kuldotha Forgemaster at a lower price than the online bots were charging (most were from 1 – 1.5 tix, I offered a playset for 3 tix) and got literally no responses. And supply was LOW at the time – most bots were out or only had 1. Don’t forget humans – they sometimes can offer good value!

  2. Excellent timely article, especially detailing the main changes with the event queues and the ramifications. The point about market liquidity is very real, cards go from bulk rare to $1 overnight (Forgemaster) and almost double over a weekend (Stoneforge Mystic from $6 to $11).

  3. @ChumpBlocka: I agree of course. It was not my intention to glorify the bots but rather remind everyone to keep an open eye for good deals and not to dismiss any possibility – bot or human.

  4. awesome, and with the forgemaster example, i have learned a serious lesson that some bots update really slow, so much so that i was picking up 10 cent forgemasters 2 days after the price bump…. keeping ur eyes open can make u a killing ^_^

  5. I’m sorry, but this ist not the site it used to be.
Where did all the high quality Modo video footage go?

I myself don’t want to invest in Modo other than the occasional draft, because my offline collection is just that expensive (wants include Jace TMS, Moat and Mana Drain).
So I love watching ohter guys play Modo – which I again can’t on here since 11 days.

Sometimes I find myself asking, why I even bother to go to this site anymore :(

  6. Hello eXXa,

the reason why videos are currently top prioritiy is twofold:

1.) As long as we do not have Mirrodin Besieged online, draft videos do not make much sense

2.) We are currently finishing up a huge project on the administrative and automation side that eats all of our man power.

We are going to increase the number of videos soon enough. Stay tuned.

  7. Great article. I might have to suggest this one to all the new players asking some of these very questions.

  8. I agree. This was a great guide on some of the nuances of the online economy and how it differs from RL. I would love it if you guys dug a little deeper and looked at some of the finer points of the market in the future.

    Thanks!

  9. Plejades – I’ve been a long time follower of this site and have loved all of the video content you’ve offered but a little transparency on the stuff you have in the works would be nice. My visits have been less frequent because recently there haven’t been many updates.

I’d suggest making a front page post with the stuff you guys have in the works to keep people interested?

  10. Hello there,

We are going to make an announcement with the things we are currently working on. I am pretty excited about them and hope that our users will find them useful as well.

    Stay tuned,

    Marin

  11. The part about foils is something many people ignore, they learned the 2x rule and just stick to it.

Some foils are worth 10x the normal price. Especially true in Masters Edition 4 right now.
Dark ritual normal 4x for 1tix. Foil = 4tixs. (seen these table in 8player drafts)
    Regrowth normal 1-2tixs. Foil = 10ish.

Also odd that some of the Pauper staples are worth a ton in foil. Thought it was supposed to be the “cheap” format.

  12. @Goozik: It isn’t odd that Pauper staples are worth a ton in foil or even at non-foil. It goes down to the basic economy principle of Supply and Demand. The more popular that Pauper gets, the more the supply of common foils decreases and the more the demand for them. The same applies to cards like Cloud of Fairies and other staples that aren’t even foil. The format is pushing the prices up and has done so even more with it being sanctioned. It is pretty “cheap” though considering the price of most constructed decks. If you want to play the real “cheap” format, there is one called Heirloom and the legality of cards is based on their price.

  13. thank you for the eye-opening article, I never would has thought about the economics of MTGO. I assumed it was all relative to MTG. I will def. recommend this reading to my friends that will be joining MTGO shortly.

  14. hey guys just wanted to know if you guys think i should even switch to mtgo from regular game play cause i am in iraq and only have a few people to play with here and it isnt by standard. i dont want to get behind with things but i also dont want to abandon them you know what i mean plus if i did get it i think it would only be for like a year so would it even be worth it
